Chapter Two: Avignon

WP_20160321_004

I arrived in Avignon after a somewhat tumultuous stay in Nimes. (It was getting dark and rainy by the time I arrived at my “hotel” only to find reception closed and myself without a room key. It was my first night solo and let’s just say I got in eventually but slept with the lights on.) Suffice it to say that by the time I got to Avignon to find a pleasant, clean and SAFE airbnb, it was a major relief.

I made the decision some weeks back to put this time to good use and enrolled in a Yoga Teacher Training course, which takes place the last three weeks in April, in Mallorca (a.k.a. Majorca, a.k.a. Ibiza’s next door neighbor in the sunny Mediterranean). Three weeks of learning, stretching, eating healthy meals and meditating with a beautiful backdrop feels like exactly what my soul needs. And who knows, it might come in handy on my travels.

Back to Avignon; I spent the week meandering, reading and studying for my yoga course (we have way too many muscles and joints) and sleeping in, which was bliss. A week was the right amount of time needed to decompress and deal with being very aware of my ‘aloneness’ on this leg of the trip. Not to say that I am lonely, although I certainly have my moments, but I do feel a profound awareness at all times that it is just me here. As my friend Lisa said, you don’t travel alone to run away, you travel alone to be confronted with yourself. I think it’s true and I think it’s also a very important thing to do, especially at a major crossroads in your life.

So Avignon was not epic, nor was it meant to be. I walked the whole of the city, twice. I ate plenty of beautiful pastries (justified by the walking, of course), I discovered what came to be my ‘regular’ cafes, I spoke a lot of French, and I relaxed. Had I been in a bigger hurry, I could have covered it in a day trip. But for me, it was just right.

I will adjust these photos whenever I next have access to a laptop (which might be some time) but in the meantime, please find below some of the beautiful sights of the small, walled-in city.

The famous Pont D’Avignon (if you don’t know the song, give it a listen), numerous churches and architectural feats, the palais des papes.

And of course, the gorgeous pastries (including an authentic croissant from Chez Sylvain – which, I’m told, is the best and am inclined to agree).

This most adorable little cafe is called Ginette et Marcel and is known for its Tartins, which is basically an open-faced sandwich. But it’s French… so it’s better:

Chapter One: Austria

The first few days of this trip were a whirlwind. Notwithstanding the last minute delay in Jasper’s starting date (we found out three days before leaving that he will need to stay on until June 30), the first 72 hours were a blur of teary goodbyes, planes, cars and multiple countries with very little sleep.

At last, we arrived in HOCH FUGEN, AUSTRIA (via Belgium & Germany), for a week of skiing, wellness and gourmet cooking.

Shin pains aside, the skiing was magnificent. Hoch Fugen is in the Tirol region of Austria, about 30km from Innsbruck, as the crow flies.  Jasper’s family goes to the same hotel every year for ‘ski vacation,’ and, after my first trip, it was easy to see why. The views are unbelievable, the skiing is fantastic and the hotel has a full wellness spa, complete with steam room, saunas, hot tub, etc. It even has a room with water beds and earphones playing classical music, in case you were not yet relaxed. It also comes with a six-course nightly dinner menu, which usually leaves us rolling back to our rooms just in time to fall asleep and do it all again the next day.

This particular hotel also hosts the restaurant Alexander, home of celebrity chef, Alexander Fankhauser (rated 18/20 in the Gault Millau… which is very high if you are unfamilar). We went on the Friday evening and had no less than thirteen courses in total, including such creations as fois gras ice cream and spun sugar apple trees (equal parts beautiful and terrifying). I had some time to sit down with the chef and ask him about his inspirations and the essence of Austrian cooking (which I will add as a separate post shortly).

Suffice it to say, the bar was set quite high for a trip that was soon to go from riches to rags as I hostel, camp and airbnb my way around the world, backpack in tow. Winking face

Below are some scenic highlights of Austria.

Top dinner courses featured, including fois gras ice cream, quail egg ravioli with shaved truffles and emulsification, scallops and caviar, edible apple encasement dusted with meringue, and a tree made out of apple three ways.

Below is a more causal, but highly authentic and local, lunch dish called a Groestl. Kind of like an Austrian bibimbop; best enjoyed outside in the sun with an alpenbitter.

Prost!

Intro: Into the Great Wide Open

After months upon months of hemming, hawing and weighing various factors, on January 4th of this year, I took the plunge. I told my boss I would be leaving my job in two months to travel around the world for a year. He inquired as to whether this was a sabbatical request and might I be interested in returning, to which I replied, ‘I think I’m ready for a change.’

Two months later, I write this first post from an airbnb in the south of France while sipping on a glass of white wine; my job, my apartment and my life as I knew it, all things of the past. If a change was what I was looking for, it is exactly what I got.

So what inspires someone to quit their life and wander like a vagabond? For me, it was a primal urge to explore; see new cultures, eat new foods and get away from the stress of the everyday rat race. Not to mention, my partner in crime (and in life) will be at my side for this amazing adventure (come July 1st).

This is my blog. It will be about the places I explore, the experiences I have and, yes, the foods that I eat! Please follow along and join me on my adventure. ❤FB_20160322_21_45_00_Saved_Picture.jpg
